13 & 14

Journal Entry: Sat Feb 14, 2009, 7:10 AM
The last time Valentine's Day fell on a Saturday (with Friday the 13th preceding it) I made this oil pastel drawing:

and I got a dd for it, which was nice. I was thinking of doing something else with both days in mind. If I do end up doing something, it will most likely be submitted early Sunday morning.

I just noticed how many people responded to my v-day poll. Thanks! It's interesting to hear what people think about it, especially when it's you guys who are intelligent and can think for yourselves, unlike a lot of people I hear from.

I've had moments of inspiration, but I can't quite seem to grasp them. It's like trying to catch that damn rabbit in Super Mario 64. You have to chase him around and even when you corner him, you have to be fast enough to grab him when he tries to run past you. Usually, I get all kinds of ideas right when I need to go to sleep. I've tried writing them down before, but it doesn't work. It's like finding something amazing about an apple and being totally enamored with looking at it and basking in its shiny red appley goodness, but then you go to sleep and wake up the next day it's like, "it's just a stupid apple". That's why I can't just write the ideas down. Because I'm not the same the next time I read them.

Here are some quotes about sleep to which I can relate:

"Dawn: When men of reason go to bed." ~Ambrose Bierce

"If a man had as many ideas during the day as he does when he has insomnia, he'd make a fortune." ~Griff Niblack

"There are twelve hours in the day, and above fifty in the night. ~Marie de Rabutin-Chantal"

Man oh man is that the truth. I write them down, but I rarely try to communicate them to others until I've had time to mill through them. Writing an idea you had in or before sleep down is like writing in your own personal shorthand. No one, often times including yourself, will ever understand or appreciate it until you translate it back out into common language. So don't despair in writing them, and don't despair when you're not terribly excited by reading them.

The other side of it is that it's like when you're sober and your drunk friend thinks he has a good idea, sometimes it's just not as good as you thought and you need to move on.

Am I making any sense?
In any event, good luck sir.

I get that a lot. I'm happy to at least get the drive to create stuff some of the time (while awake enough to do something about it).

You don't seem to have too much of a problem with it though. I like the stuff in your sketchbook on your blog.

I was going to use the drunk/sober thing, but It's not something I've really experienced, so I thought I should probably find another way to say it.

I'm doing pretty good with it right now, but everyone has their droughts. Sometimes it's just a matter of momentum. If you force yourself to push your way through a couple pieces, even if they're not so great, it can help you get started up again.

At school I'm pretty much under the gun to create constantly, and there's a lot of shit that doesn't get put up for everyone to see in the end.

Regardless of me babbling around and trying to be helpful, you have it in you, I've seen it, so if you keep digging you'll figure it out. Maybe you just need to try some different approaches?

It's actually not such a big problem for me. I'm mostly just not in the mood to draw (lately). But at certain times my creativity just balloons and I have to kind of force myself to sleep instead because it's always at the worst times that it happens.

Thanks for the kind words though. I'm glad you started coming around again. :manhug:

how I like those quotes!!
Where did you find them, or did you just know them by heart??

I just found them online. I like Ambrose Bierce a lot though. He has a book called the Devil's Dictionary where he writes his own definitions to basic words. That quote might actually be from the book. If it is, it's the definition of "dawn".
